1. The Red Color is Actually Rust
Mars appears red because its surface is covered in iron oxide. Put simply, Martian dust contains the same minerals as rusted iron on Earth. If you were to scrape away that thin layer of red dust, the ground beneath it would actually look grayish.
2. Home to the Solar System’s Largest Volcano
Mars is home to a shield volcano called Olympus Mons. It stands at a staggering 21.9 km high, making it nearly three times taller than Mount Everest. Its base is roughly the size of the state of Arizona or the country of France!
3. Super Jumps Due to Low Gravity
Gravity on Mars is only about 38% of Earth’s gravity. If you weigh 100 kg on Earth, you would feel like you weigh only 38 kg on Mars. This means you could jump three times as high and lift much heavier loads than you can here.
4. Blue Sunsets
While Earth has blue skies during the day and red sunsets, Mars is the exact opposite. Because of the fine dust particles in its thin atmosphere, blue light is captured near the Sun, making Martian sunsets appear distinctly blue.
5. A Canyon That Dwarfs the Grand Canyon
If Earth has the Grand Canyon, Mars has Valles Marineris. This canyon system is over 4,000 km long—nearly the distance from New York to Los Angeles. It reaches depths of 7 km, making it the largest canyon system in our solar system.
6. The Tragic Fate of the Moon Phobos
Mars has two small moons: Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is slowly spiraling inward toward Mars (at a rate of about 1.8 meters every century). Scientists predict that in 30 to 50 million years, Phobos will either crash into Mars or be torn apart to form a ring around the planet.

2. Rumah bagi Gunung Berapi Terbesar
Mars memiliki gunung berapi bernama Olympus Mons. Tingginya mencapai 21,9 km, yang berarti sekitar tiga kali lebih tinggi dari Gunung Everest. Ukuran dasarnya pun hampir seluas negara bagian Arizona atau negara Prancis!

5. Ngarai yang Sangat Luas
Jika Bumi punya Grand Canyon, Mars punya Valles Marineris. Ngarai ini memiliki panjang lebih dari 4.000 km—hampir sepanjang jarak dari New York ke Los Angeles. Kedalamannya mencapai 7 km, menjadikannya sistem ngarai terbesar di tata surya kita.
6. Nasib Tragis Bulan Phobos
Mars memiliki dua bulan kecil: Phobos dan Deimos. Phobos perlahan-lahan bergerak mendekati Mars (sekitar 1,8 meter setiap seratus tahun). Diperkirakan dalam 30 hingga 50 juta tahun ke depan, Phobos akan menabrak Mars atau hancur membentuk cincin di sekitar planet tersebut.
