He is an Indonesian astronomer who works as a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany.
In June 2005, a group of European and Brazilian astronomers under his leadership successfully discovered an exoplanet (a planet outside our solar system) named HD 11977B. The next discovery was a planet orbiting a very young star, named TW-Hydrae, which is still within the dust and gas disk surrounding its parent star—published in *Nature*, vol. 451, 38 (2008). Other discoveries include HIP 13044 b, HD 47536 c, HD 110014 b, HD 110014 c, HD 11977 b, and HD 70573 b.

Pada Juni 2005, kelompok astronom Eropa dan Brazil di bawah pimpinannya berhasil menemukan sebuah planet luar surya (Exsoplanet = di luar tata surya) yang diberi nama HD 11977B. Penemuan berikutnya adalah sebuah planet yang mengitari sebuah bintang yang sangat muda, bernama TW- Hydrae yang masih dalam piringan cakram debu dan gas yang mengelilingi bintang induknya –dipublikasinya di Nature, vol. 451, 38 (2008)-. Penemuan lainnya adalah HIP 13044 b. HD 47536 c, HD 110014 b, HD 110014 c, HD 11977 b, HD 70573 b.
