Earth is far more than just a “blue marble” floating in space. Our home planet holds many technical secrets and extraordinary natural phenomena.
Here are some unique facts about Earth that you might not know:
1. Earth Isn’t Perfectly Round
While it looks like a perfect sphere from satellite photos, Earth is actually an oblate spheroid. Because of its rotation, Earth “bulges” slightly at the equator and is somewhat flat at the poles. The distance from Earth’s center to the equator is about 21 kilometers further than the distance to the poles.

2. Earth’s Core is as Hot as the Sun’s Surface
Beneath our feet lies intense heat. Earth’s inner core is estimated to have a temperature of about 5,400 to 6,000 degrees Celsius. This is nearly as hot as the surface of the Sun. This heat comes from radioactive decay and residual heat from the planet’s formation.

3. We Are “Flying” Through Space
You might feel like you’re sitting still, but you’re actually moving incredibly fast:
Rotation: Earth spins on its axis at a speed of about 1,600 km/h at the equator.
Revolution: Earth orbits the Sun at a speed of approximately 107,000 km/h.
4. Fresh Water is Extremely Rare
About 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by water, but 97% of it is saltwater. Of the remaining 3% of fresh water, more than two-thirds is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. This means that less than 1% of Earth’s water is actually accessible for human daily use.

5. The Only Planet with Tectonic Plates
Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to have plate tectonics. These plates are constantly moving and “recycling” carbon. Without this process, Earth could experience an extreme greenhouse effect like Venus and become too hot to inhabit.

The Farthest Atmosphere: Earth’s atmosphere actually extends up to 10,000 km into space (the exosphere).
Oxygen from the Sea: Most of Earth’s oxygen (about 50-80%) is actually produced by phytoplankton in the ocean, not by rainforests.
